Trace3 Response to SolarWinds Hack

Attacks on 3rd party software platforms as a vector for comprising internal organizational systems and data continues to rise. Monitoring the announcement of these compromises and taking swift action to evaluate their impact is critical to ensuring the integrity of corporate systems and continued protection of employee and customer data.

On 12/13/20 it was revealed that threat actors had inserted malicious software into SolarWinds products. Trace3 utilizes SolarWinds to monitor internal on-premises hardware and it does not interact with systems used to directly service our customers. We investigated the SolarWinds software installed in our environment and found the following:

  1. An unaffected version of SolarWinds Orion platform was running in production (2018.2).
  2. No indicators of compromise (IOC) are present that showed a modification, compromise, or breach of the system or monitored systems.

Per CISA guidance on 12/17/20 under Alert (AA20-352A) for the advanced persistent threat related to the attack, Trace3 falls under “Category 1” for mitigations:

“[…] includes those who do not have the identified malicious binary. These owners can patch their systems and resume use as determined by and consistent with their internal risk evaluations.”

Trace3 applied the vendor recommended patches on 12/13/20, as well as additional patches that were released and installed on 12/16/20. We have also taken further mitigation steps to ensure all privileged access is removed from the SolarWinds platform while investigation into the attack continues. We will also continue to monitor for current and future IOCs related to the attack.

Proactive monitoring of our Trace3 systems and data continues to be a top priority for our IT and Information Security teams. We take our responsibility to protect information and systems entrusted to us seriously and will take every precaution and action available to us to ensure we continue to do the very best we can.

Trace3’s AI in Healthcare Summits Bring Hospital Tech Leaders Together

Trace3’s Research team released its latest Strategic Technology Report titled Managing Cybersecurity Risk. The 25-page report examines four key emerging trends in cybersecurity, these are Endpoint Security Risk Management, Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), Internet of Things in the Era of 5G, Enterprise IT Governance, Risk, and Compliance. The report outlines the future direction of enterprise cybersecurity in the age of increasing risks and regulatory complexity.

Weeks before this ‘new normal’ forced companies across industries to quickly migrate to all-remote work environments, Trace3 organized and curated an event experience for technology startups and healthcare organizations, that, in many ways, offered a true glimpse of what’s to come. The ‘Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare’ Thematic Briefing offered participants a boutique event platform to evaluate emerging areas of artificial intelligence (AI) in a sector that has massive potential to be its biggest beneficiary.

AI can deliver efficiencies across myriad workflows that hospitals and their healthcare system parent companies so desperately need. Hospitals want to deliver an unrivaled patient experience informed by great data insights across their campuses, but that is a lot easier said than done. Before this pandemic, one of the AI in Healthcare attendees compared a hospital room to a $1500/night mediocre experience riddled with inefficiencies. The current pandemic, which we know is putting enormous strain on healthcare systems, makes correcting those inefficiencies even more difficult in the months and years ahead.

It is also an uphill battle for CIOs and their IT teams whose time is more precious than ever. They need and appreciate substantive discussion and problem solving with other technologists and business decision makers. Such discussions inform the tactics for achieving that ultimate objective and moving their roadmaps forward. Read the Entire Story Here

Project Sole: As Winter Hits Hard, Trace3 Partners with Bombas Socks to Fulfill Ongoing Need for Vulnerable Communities

Trace3 announced today its winter 2020 partnership with Bombas Socks. "While deciding on our first philanthropic campaign of the new decade, we were also looking for a way to give back to the Grand Rapids and Orange County communities, and in our research we learned that socks are the most needed, but least donated item at homeless shelters," said Sandy Salty, Chief Marketing Officer, Trace3. "Project Sole is a giving campaign that encourages community participation and fulfills a real community need - especially during the sub-zero winter weather for which Grand Rapids is known. We're delighted to partner with Bombas - they make durable, comfortable socks - to provide this assistance all winter long to the local homeless communities served by the wonderful teams at Mel Trotter Ministries and Project Hope Alliance." Trace3 Survey Reveals Widespread Lack of IT Planning for AIOps

More than Half of IT Teams Lag in Adoption of Artificial Intelligence for Datacenter Operations

Trace3, a leader in business transformation solutions, released the results of a new survey showing that 76 percent of IT teams have not yet implemented artificial intelligence technologies to improve datacenter operations, despite the benefits of AIOps for business efficiency.

Even more concerning, just 20 percent of IT managers who have implemented AIOps in the past year say they have achieved value from their investments. That compares to 38 percent who have not yet recognized value from AIOps, and 42 percent who say the extent of value from AIOps remains unclear.

Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations, known as AIOps, has emerged as a powerful tool for IT teams to automate datacenter processes by combining big data, machine learning and visualization tools. Infrastructure and operations leaders implement AIOps platforms to refine their current performance analyses. Over the next five years, the goal will be to further augment IT service management and automation.

The Trace3 survey reveals that most IT leaders are still struggling to implement effective strategies for AIOps due to a lack of clarity about their own technology expectations and business objectives, according to David Ishmael, Trace3 Vice President of Operations Analytics.

Trace3 to Host Annual Client Advisory Board with famed “Dean of Innovation” as Moderator

Each year Trace3 hosts a Client Advisory Board (CAB) and welcomes technology leaders from over twenty unique clients to a 3-day offsite conference. Working collaboratively through moderated sessions, these respected business leaders identify and discuss the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in their industries and for their businesses. The valuable insights, guidance, and recommendations these seasoned professionals provide helps Trace3 refine and deliver a strategy to ensure we are prepared to support our customer’s changing needs.

We are proud to announce Jeff DeGraff will be moderating the 2017 Client Advisory Board this September. Jeff has advised many of the world’s leading corporations, using the Competing Values Framework he co-created, on how to grow, change and ultimately move forward to see positive results. Jeff’s creative and direct take on making innovation really happen have made him a world renowned thought leader and has prompted his clients and colleagues to dub him as The Dean of Innovation. Jeff was instrumental in the development of the Certified Professional Innovator (CPI) program designed to develop highly practiced innovation leaders which has been certified by the University of Michigan College of Engineering or Ross School of Business. Jeff’s ideas have gained such a following that he created the Innovatrium – an innovation institute in the heart of the University of Michigan’s campus. We are absolutely thrilled Jeff will be joining us for the 2017 Client Advisory Board conference.
