Everyone is chasing after “the secret to success,” but Michael McGibbney has built a career out of it. As the Senior Vice President of Service Delivery and Operations at SAP SuccessFactors, McGibbney works to ensure that SuccessFactors’ clients implement the ideal human capital management system for their organization’s needs, all across the Cloud. SAP SuccessFactors offers an award-winning selection of Human Resources software based on the SaaS (software as a service) model. It operates under the greater SAP organization, the leader in delivering enterprise management software. SAP boasts over 183,000 customers in 130 countries, with 13,000 of those using SuccessFactors to assist with human capital management “from hire to retire.” Talk about finding success!
McGibbney was honored during our 2018 Outlier Award Gala at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, as part of our annual Trace3 Evolve Conference. Here are some of our takeaways from what Michael had to say.
- Engage key values – Just a month into his role at SAP, McGibbney was asked to be a Keynote Speaker at a major company event. He rose up to the challenge, focusing his talk on four core promises that he strives for to this day, “availability, transparency, speed, maturity.” He holds himself and his team accountable to those promises as they design the software that shapes millions of careers.
- Don’t take a back seat – Sit back on the heels of success? Never! McGibbney knows that you’re only as good as your last project, and he strives to innovate as an engaged, collaborative leader. He takes pride in his team’s ambition and brilliant work.“We have the talent, motivation, and will to win not only for SAP, but for our customers’ objectives.”
- Take a holistic approach – McGibbney’s title is certainly specialized, but his leadership style is not. He makes every decision with consideration for the greater goals of the client, as well as for his company. Many tech leaders get caught up in the specifics of the software that they manage and forget about the greater workings of the organization around them. However, McGibbney knows that sustainable success comes from a wide viewpoint.“What’s important to be a successful IT leader is understanding how all of the dimensions come together, including people, culture, technology, business, and financial dimensions.” His approach is reflected in his diverse experience including American Express, HP, and most recently, the NFL Players Association.
