Connecting our clients with innovative technologies that successfully solve business problems is a key initiative for Trace3. To do this, we partner with Venture Capital firms to connect CIOs with new and vetted companies. This program, VC Briefings, is the fastest way to establish relationships with the very best up and coming technologies.

Recently, CIO magazine ran a story on the VC Briefing that Trace3 set up with Chris Laping, CIO of Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, last summer. Laping flew to Silicon Valley and met with VC firms Andreessen Horowitz and Greylock Partners, as well as seven or eight start-up companies. Each of the start-up companies presented their solutions and products for approximately 30 minutes, and at the end of the day, Laping walked away with dozens of solutions that solve the most painful problems in his industry.

“If it’s a bust, at least you haven’t wasted much time,” he says. Those conversations were “more real, more tangible and more valuable” because he was talking to company leaders, not lackeys.

As the article points out, Red Robin hasn’t signed any big deals with the startups, but the company is testing them this year. Three in particular are of interest to the company: HireVue for cloud-based video interviewing, Pixlee for the compilation of customer photos in their restaurants, and Quantifind for enterprise analytics. All of these companies operate in the cloud, which Laping regards highly.

“If you’re innovating today, it’s going to happen in the cloud. You’re able to turn on a lot of cool stuff a lot faster without onboarding a lot of new IT talent.”
